About this tea
Scottish Breakfast represents the apex of breakfast tea strength, created to match Scotland's preference for incredibly robust tea and to complement the hearty Scottish breakfast. This blend emerged from Scotland's unique tea culture, where soft water required stronger teas to achieve proper flavor extraction, leading to blends that could 'stand up and walk out of the cup.'
The blend typically features the strongest Assam teas available, often including premium Assam FTGFOP (Finest Tippy Golden Flowery Orange Pekoe), combined with African teas from Kenya or Malawi for additional strength and color. Some blends incorporate a small amount of China Keemun for complexity, but strength remains paramount. The leaves are often CTC processed for maximum extraction.
The flavor profile is intensely robust: powerful maltiness with notes of molasses and honey, full-bodied to the point of being chewy, with pronounced astringency that absolutely requires milk. The liquor is deep mahogany, darker than any other breakfast blend. This is tea as fuel - designed to fortify against Highland weather and provide serious caffeination. Think of it as espresso in tea form.
Brewing recommendations: Use 1 heaping teaspoon (5g) per 250ml cup with fully boiling water (100°C/212°F) and steep for 5 minutes for maximum strength. Always serve with milk - this tea is too powerful to drink plain. Sugar helps balance the intensity. The Scots often use a higher leaf-to-water ratio than other regions.
Best as a morning tea with traditional Scottish breakfast including porridge, kippers, black pudding, and oatcakes. Also excellent with shortbread and other Scottish baked goods. The extremely high caffeine content (75mg per cup) makes it unsuitable for afternoon or evening unless you need to stay alert. Not for the faint of heart!
