About this tea

Golden Monkey (Jin Hou) represents one of China's finest black teas, originating from Fujian Province and sometimes Yunnan. The name comes from the tea pickers' resemblance to monkeys as they climb steep mountain slopes to pluck the tender buds and leaves. The 'golden' refers to the abundant golden tips that give this tea its distinctive appearance and smooth character.

This tea emerged in the early 20th century as Chinese tea makers sought to create premium black teas to compete with Indian and Ceylon teas in international markets. Golden Monkey succeeded brilliantly, offering a sophistication and smoothness that set it apart from more robust colonial teas. Only the bud and first leaf are used, hand-processed with exceptional skill to preserve the golden tips.

The flavor profile is remarkably smooth and complex: natural honey sweetness balanced with cocoa or chocolate notes, hints of malt and fruit, with absolutely no astringency or bitterness. The tea produces a silky mouthfeel with a lingering sweet aftertaste. Multiple infusions reveal evolving flavors - the first steeping emphasizes honey sweetness, subsequent ones bring out chocolate and malt notes.

Brewing recommendations: Use 1 teaspoon (3g) per 250ml cup with water at 90°C (195°F) and steep for 2.5 minutes. This tea rewards careful brewing - too hot water or long steeping diminishes its subtlety. Can yield 3-4 infusions when brewed Western style, more with gongfu method.

Best enjoyed plain to appreciate its natural sweetness and complexity. Pairs beautifully with dark chocolate, nuts, mild cheeses, and honey pastries. This is an afternoon tea for contemplation or special occasions. The smooth character makes it an excellent introduction to premium Chinese black teas for those accustomed to stronger breakfast blends.
